Fufanu support Damon Albarn at The Royal Albert Hall
According to Rolling Stone magazine, Icelandic band Fufanu sounds like Disclosure attending Bela Lugosi's funeral, Joy Division's secret jam band phase and a glacier on fire. The bands brooding soundscapes attracted the attention of Damon Albarn who asked them to support his show at the Royal Albert Hall last week.
" Kaktus (lead singer and songwriter) has been working with Damon on his latest projects, including his recent album Everyday Robots and on the tour following that album where he works as a technician and a trumpet player," explains drummer Frosti Gnarr. " This summer Damon was interested in hearing some of the new music Kaktus had been making so he played him a couple of Fufanu demos which Damon really liked. Following that he asked us to do the support for that show. "
From techno to kraut-infused psychedelia
Gnarr joined the band last year when Fufanu, originally named Captain Fufanu changed from a techno duo to a more psychedelic rock band. Now an outfit of five people, Fufanu were heralded as one of the ten bands you need to know by Rolling Stone Magazine and received rave reviews at Iceland Airwaves where they made David Fricke's top 10 shows.
Gnarr, whose father is former Icelandic Mayor Jón Gnarr, hence the surname, describes playing at the historic Royal Albert Hall as rather a surreal experience as it was their first gig abroad. " It was an absolutely great experience that none of us will ever forget."
Fufanu are playing at the Eursonic festival in January and are releasing their very first single at the end of the same month, and explains Gnarr, "Our first album will follow shortly after that."
