Fresh currents, dark days
The Dark Music Days festival of contemporary music is currently taking place at Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre. The festival has been one of Iceland's foremost platforms for innovative music. The opening concert of Dark Music Days today is performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Petri Sakari and ocuses on Icelandic works.
Leifur Þórarinsson and Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson are among the Icelandic composers who made their mark on Iceland's musical scene in the late 20th century. Both of them were citizens of the world who brought fresh currents and ideas to Iceland, not only as composers but also as educators and radio broadcasters.
The final work at the opening concert is a premiere of Hilmar Þórðarson's work Lupus chorea featuring soloists Hávarður Tryggvason and Sigrún Eðvaldsdóttir.
Following tonight's opening concert in Eldborg main hall is a the stark contrast of a premiere of Þóranna Björnsdóttir's electroacoustic piece, Ljóstýra.
Dark Music Days continue until Sunday.
