New cake shop opens at Reykjavik harbour
Joining the growing number of gourmet shops in the Grandi harbour area is Sautján sortir (Seventeen varities), a new cake shop. Owner Auður Ögn Árnadóttir explains that the new shop will offer 17 different varities of cake each day with the selection also varying from day to day.
The cakes are intended to be "home style" and Árnadóttir believes that this new venture will be popular for locals shopping for gourmet dinners at Grandagarður, which now also features a delicatessen, a speciality butcher shop and a gourmet ice cream shop.
The name of the shop, Sautján sortir comes from the famed novel by Halldór Laxness, Kristnihald undir jökli (Under the Glacier). Vegans and people with gluten intolerance can also rejoice as cakes for them will be on offer, as well as cakes without sugar.
"We have huge cakes, cupcakes, cake slices to take away in pretty boxes," explains Árnadóttir who does however stress that no bread or sandwiches will be for sale, the shop is just for those with a sweet tooth.
