American Darwin-award nominees...

“I see all sorts of silly behaviour, but I have never seen people messing about on the ice in their pants,” says tour guide Þórarinn Jónsson. This morning, Jónsson was treated to the spectacle of two Americans stripping to their underwear and walking out onto the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Jónsson filmed the incident and posted it on Facebook, where many readers wondered at the tourists’ stupidity.

“I watched them for a short time and informed that the water there is 4°C and very deep and that nobody would be around to rescue them if they fell in,” recounts Jónsson.

Jónsson states that he does not know what the men’s intentions were, but it seems that they were simply fooling around. “I asked them whether they had heard of Darwin and natural selection. I then instructed them to come back onto dry land as soon as possible.”
