Rising support for national park

Support for setting up a national park in the central highlands of Iceland has reached 61.4%, according to a new Gallup opinion poll for the Icelandic Environment Association and the Iceland Nature Conservation Association.

Opposition dwindling

This is five percentage points higher than in a comparable poll in October 2011. Opposition to a proposed national park has fallen to 12.4%.

Cross-party support

A press release on the subject reads: “There is cross-party support for a national park in the central highlands of Iceland. Across the entire political spectrum, those in favour far outnumber those against. […] The findings of this poll are great news for the campaign to protect the highlands of Iceland, which is clearly garnering ever more support among Icelanders. The Icelandic Environment Association and the Iceland Nature Conservation Association are currently working together on a common project to ensure permanent protection for the highlands.”
