Icelandair among safest low-cost airlines

Icelandair has won a place in the Top 10 safest low-cost airlines for 2015, according to a study carried out by AirlineRatings.com. The website monitors 449 airlines across the world.

Low-cost interest

Recent events in the aviation industry have brought the issue of airline safety - particularly among low-cost airlines - into the public spotlight. AirlineRatings.com has been operating since June 2013 and this year, in response to public interest, published a list of Top 10 safest low-cost airlines alongside the usual Top 10 safest airlines list.

Icelandair flying high

AirlineRatings.com’s rating system takes into account information from audits conducted by international aviation governing bodies, combined with each airline’s fatality record, its operational history, incident records and operational excellence.

The Top 10 safest low-cost airlines for 2015, in alphabetical order, are: Aer Lingus, Alaska Airlines, Icelandair, Jetblue, Jetstar,  Kulula.com, Thomas Cook, TUI Fly, Virgin America and Westjet.

Aviation ever safer

Fifty years ago, there were 87 air accidents killing 1,597, out of a total of 141 million passengers worldwide. In 2014, passenger numbers were 3.3 billion and fatalities, 986. A total of 21 fatal accidents occurred out of the 27 million flights operated.
