Two tremors in south-west Iceland – the first measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale and the second, 4 – were felt in the capital Reykjavik earlier this afternoon.

There has been a wave of tremors in the area since this morning, with some forty measured so far. According to the Icelandic Met Office, the tremors occurred 3 km below ground.

The strongest quake occurred at 1:10pm, measuring 4 on the Richter scale, and was felt in many parts of the capital. Icelandic Met Office information indicates that the tremors are connected to traditional plate movement and are not related to volcanic activity.
