Icelandair burns a quarter more fuel per passenger-kilometre than the most fuel-efficient airline flying across the Atlantic, according to a new International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) report.

The report looks at fuel efficiency among the top twenty airlines on transatlantic routes between North America.

Icelandair aircraft in 2014 flew 32 passenger-kilometres per litre of fuel burnt, and is therefore right on the industry average (see graph below).

Norwegian is the best performer in the fuel-efficiency rankings, flying 40 passenger-kilometres per litre of fuel burnt. At the bottom end of the table is British Airways, with a figure of just 27.

According to Icelandic tourism and travel website turisti.is (link in Icelandic), “Icelandair’s fleet is getting old […]. The Boeing 737 MAX jets to be delivered in 2018-21 will be around one-fifth more efficient than the Boeing 757 aircraft the airline currently flies.”
