If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes, is a common Icelandic witticism. Well, it might take a couple of days rather than five minutes, but Iceland could to be headed for a spectacular 30°C temperature shift over the next few days.

The cold snap currently affecting Iceland is likely to reach its height tonight, with some northern parts possible seeing minima of -20°C.

The cold weather is then set to move south-east towards mainland Europe. Strong southerly winds originating from the Gulf of Mexico take over on Saturday bringing considerably warm air.

Meteorologist Trausti Jónsson expects a temperature shift of some 30°C at high altitudes, and perhaps slightly more modest – and region-dependent – changes on the ground.

“If the cold really kicks in in North Iceland, temperatures could fall to -20°C, while parts of South-East Iceland could see over 10°C this weekend,” he forecasts.
