Geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson says the subsidence in Bárðarbunga is a cause for grave concern. A 20 meters subsidence in the Bárðarbunga caldera was observed in a surveillance flight over the area recently.

"The subsidence is a cause for grave concern. We are now going down a path that we don't know where will end," Magnús says, adding that the caldera is full of ice. Subsidence like the one seen in Bárðarbunga has not been observed in recent times.

"An eruption in the caldera can cause a massive jökulhlaup. If the eruption manages to break through the ice, we might also be looking at a large explosive eruption."

Magnús warns that with increasing subsidence in the Bárðarbunga caldera, the odds of an eruption in Bárðarbunga are also increasing.
