Snow falling on Holuhraun

Snow covers the ground around the volcanic eruption in Holuhraun which is still ongoing and has been for almost a month. Tomorrow one month exactly has passed since the eruption started.

More lava hasn't flowed from a single volcanic eruption in Iceland since the eruption in the volcano Hekla in 1947.

Scientists believe more than 0.5 cubic kilometres of lava have reached the surface in the eruption in Holuhraun. In the eruption in Hekla in 1947 0.8 cubic kilometres reached the surface.

The lava from the eruption in Holuhraun is now larger than the lava Tröllahraun which was created in an eruption southeast of Bárðarbunga which lasted for two years from 1862-1864.
