Acid rain may fall
The first acid rain may soon be expected since the start of the eruption in Holuhraun, says Sara Barsotti at the Icelandic Meterological Institute. Water samples from around the country are regularly taken and measured. So far, no acid rain has been measured since the beginning of the eruption.
Acid rain falls where the rainwater blends with sulphuric acid, nitric acid and organic acids. Poisonous gases are being emitted by the craters in Holuhraun and a blue mist has been distributed around the country from the eruption. People with respiratory diseases are urged to try to remain mostly indoors.
Acid rain can damage vegetation and destroy forests as well as causing erosion of buildings.
