Travellers around Iceland this weekend are advised that the Hvalfjörður tunnel, which makes your northward journey from Reykjavík shorter by cutting out the very long, but beautiful drive around the fjord of Hvalfjörður, is closed for repair. The tunnel will reopen at 6.a.m on Monday morning.

The Hvalfjörður tunnel is located north of Reykjavik by the roots of Mount Esja and lies underneath the ocean straight towards the town of Akranes. New tarmac is currently being laid in the tunnel.

Icelandic children are on half-term this week and plenty of families choose to spend this weekend in the countryside.

Meanwhile, travellers could instead enjoy the drive through Hvalfjörður, a beautiful fjord that offers plenty of beautiful sights and nature walks.
