What did Reykjavík look like in 1926?

Schreenshot

The following video offers a glimpse into life in Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, in the year 1926.

The total city's total population at that time was about 21,000 people compared to the present population of more than 120,000. Few cars were found in the city. Most people travelled on foot unless they had horses. By that time Iceland had been a sovereign country within the Kingdom of Denmark since 1918. Some 28 years, however, passed until Iceland became an independent republic which happened on 17 June 1944.

The video was shot by the American traveller, photographer and filmmaker Burton Holmes.
