Approximately 80 earthquakes have been detected around the Bárðarbunga caldera. Strongest events were 5.3 today at 05:48 on the southeastern caldera rim and 4.7 yesterday at 12:10 on the northern rim.

Seven additional events were larger than M4 and around five between M3.0-3.9. Seismic activity on the caldera rim has significantly decreased in terms of number and strength of events following the M5.3 earthquake this morning. Temporary low activity has previously been observed for several M>5 events and can not be interpreted as a decrease of the overall activity. The subsidence rate of the caldera had shortly increased around one hour after the M5.3 and is now again back to normal rates, which also is a frequent observation associated with M>5 earthquakes in Bárðarbunga.

Around 20 events have been detected in the northern part of the dyke intrusion, the strongest was 2.1 at 11:51 yesterday.

Low activity has been detected around Tungnafellsjökull, Herðurbreið and Askja during the last 24 hours.

The eruption is ongoing, but rarely visible so far today.
