Reykjavík received the Nordic Council's nature and environmental award for 2014 at a formal awards ceremony in Stockholm. A total of 350 Danish crowns were awarded for " excellent achievement in several sectors."

The statement of the jury said that the City of Reykjavik received the award due to extensive and relentless work in environmental matters and inspiring others in that field. Among the reasons cited was that 87 percent of vehicles in the city are powered by gas or electricity and that the city was the only capital of the Nordic countries where all homes and buildings had access to untreated drinking water.
