It was bound to happen - an Icelandic jeweller is now creating jewellery from the Holuhraun lava field  and calls it "fiery hot" at the moment. Gull og silfur on central shopping street, Laugavegur has received great response from tourists who flock to buy the jewellery collection.

Family-owned Gull og silfur (Gold and Silver) was founded 43 years ago and has long crafted jewellery from lava pieces. The new collection is made with silver and features brand new lava from the latest edition of Icelandic volcanic eruptions. The shop's window display is dedicated to the eruption and is popular with curious passers-by.

"International tourists are particulary interested in the jewellery range but Icelanders also buy it for its historical value, says goldsmith Sigurður Steinþórsson. "The range hasn't been named yet and we are looking for an Icelandic name," explains Steinþórsson who invites people to suggest a name for the range on the store's Facebook page. The best suggestion receives a piece of volcanic jewellery.
