"I am a slut"

A new book of photographs documenting the annual Slut Walk in Reykjavík will hit bookstore shelves before Christmas. The book, titled  Ég er drusla //I am a Slut,  by photographer Rúnar Gunnarsson and is published in both Icelandic and English. Gunnarsson explains how "he woke up" to issues regarding rape culture when he attended the slut walk in the city centre.

Slut Walks are a transnational movement of protest marches calling for an end to rape culture and began after a Toronto police offecer suggested that " women should avoid dressing like sluts" as a precaution to sexual harrassment or rape.

Gunnarsson selected 100 photographs and contacted one of the organisers of the Slut Walk, María Rut Kristinsdóttir to edit the book which features excerpts from speeches and articles connected to the subject. All proceeds of the book will go to a fund to aid the fight against sexual violence.

"It's been incredible to watch how the Slut Walk has grown in Reykjavík. I think this book documents what you can change in Icelandic society by just repeating a mantra often enough: to put the shame where it belongs, to the perpetrators of sexual violence," explains Kristinsdóttir.

"I'm really lucky to play a part in changing attitudes," says Gunnarsson. " I decided straight away that the topic really mattered to me and I'm doing this with full force. "
