Minister of the Interior Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir has announced her resignation today. She will step down despite support from the Independence Party to remain Minister.

Kristjánsdóttir has been in the line of fire since a media leak from the Ministry concerning an asylum seeker occurred. Her former assistant Gísli Freyr Valdórsson received an eight month suspended sentence last week upon confessing to the leak.

In a statement from Kristjánsdóttir just now she says that she has announced her resignation to the leader of the Independence Party after considerable thought. She adds that the confession of Valdórsson was a considerable shock for her and that too many people had been dragged into the case including the former and the current chief of police in Reykjavík.

Kristjánsdóttir will not be available for press interviews today and will be spending time with her family.
