Fifteen graves and one cross have been damaged at Grafarvogur churchyard in Reykjavik due to reckless driving. Deep tracks were photographed in the churchyard on Boxing Day by Íris Guðmundsdóttir who was visiting a grave elsewhere in the churchyard. "We were very shocked to see this," she said to mbl.is. "It's not something you want to see and we hope there's another explanation than just plain vandalism."
Incident to be reported to police
It appears that a small jeep and a larger jeep drove across the graves and damaged them. There were witnesses to the incident which will be reported to police on Monday. The damage caused to the graves have caused much emotional upset with relatives of the deceased says Þórsteinn Ragnarsson, director of the Reykjavik churchyards. He urges the drivers of the vehicles to come forward.
Immoral thing to do
Helene Sif Þorgeirsdóttir, gardener at the Gufunes churchyard says that it seems the jeep drove over the graves and got stuck. She expects that the drivers expected the ground to be frozen, which it was not. "It's such an immoral thing to do," she said to mbl.is. "It's obviously people visiting graves of their loved ones but at the same time they destroy fifteen other graves. There's parking nearby and these people could have walked this short distance."
