A 59-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for possession of child pornography and offences under firearms legislation. The accused was on probation for sexual offences against an young boy with developmental disabilities.

Jón Sverrir Bragason was stopped by customs at Keflavík Airport on suspicion of carrying computers and data storage devices containing illegal images. The items in question were seized and found to contain a large quantity of child pornography.

Bragason was taken in for questioning and his residence was searched on 19 August last year. Various computers and data storage devices, as well as an unregistered rifle, were seized. Bragason denied all charges, claiming that other persons might have had access to his tablet computer and downloaded the material in question and that he had bought second-hand data storage devices in China, meaning the material was there beforehand.

The Supreme Court banned Bragason from travelling on 26 August, a ban which has not been lifted since.

Previous conviction for sexual offences

Back in May 2010, Bragason was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for exploiting the developmental disabilities, sexual naivety and computer addiction of an underage teenage boy to have intercourse with him on several occasions.

Bragason was released on probation on 7 December 2012, 420 days before the end of his sentence. This time is included in his new non-suspended sentence.
