"People should have the right to take their pets on the bus," says Andri Kárason, the instigator of a petition urging the Icelandic bus company Strætó to begin allowing pets on their vehicles.

"Owning a pet has a positive influence on people's mental health. But current rules in force in residential buildings, public transport and public places prevent people from giving their pets the good life they deservce," states Kárason. In his view, Strætó management should look to other European countries and lay down rules for taking pets on buses in Iceland.

"For instance, in London passengers may take dogs on a leash onto public transport at no extra cost, unless the driver considers the dog to pose a threat or cause inconvenience to other passengers," Kárason explains.

Over 3,000 people have signed the petition so far, the target being to reach 5,000 by March 20, when the petition will be sumbitted to Strætó. The petition (in Icelandic) can be found here.
