Some 45% of all thefts reported so far this year to the 5th Division of the Greater Reykavik Police (which serves central and west Reykjavik and Seltjarnarnes) involve the theft of mobile phones.

Pubs and clubs targeted

So far in 2015, 141 reports of theft have been received, of which 63 involved the theft of mobile phones. “A great many reports are received at the beginning of the week, as most mobile phones are stolen in pubs and clubs in central Reykjavik over the weekend,” explains Chief Superintendent Kristján Ólafur Guðnason.

In Guðnason’s view, an organised crime operation targeting mobile phones cannot be ruled out.
