Chief of Police in South Iceland, Oddur Árnason says that travel agencies should have ensured that all coaches had returned before the storm hit yesterday. A number of tourists were stranded in popular tourist spots due to the weather.

Árnason adds that there were several weather warnings issued before the storm yesterday and that it's the responsability of travel agencies to listen to such weather warnings.

One director of a travel agency that mbl.is spoke to this morning said that coaches had been sent on tours yesterday morning because they believed the storm would only last for three hours.

"That's not the warning we ssued, and not the warning from the Iceland Met Office or the Icelandic Civil Protection," says Árnason. He also mentions that plenty of tourists were stuck in rental cars during the storm yesterday and had apparently either ignored weather warnings or not seen or heard them.

Mbl.is reported in both Icelandic and English on Monday night and on Tuesday morning warning people about the storm.
