Unwanted bikes wanted!

Today marks the start of the annual Save the Children Iceland bicycle collection, which is run in collaboration with Youth (the IOGT children’s movement in Iceland) and the Icelandic Mountain Bike Club.

Collection points

This is Save the Children’s fourth annual drive to collect unwanted bikes for children and young adults. Bikes will be collected until 30 April at selected Hringrás and Sorpa recycling stations in the Greater Reykjavik area and at post-offices elsewhere in Iceland.

The bikes collected will be given to children who cannot afford to buy a bike of their own. The bikes will be repaired, then given to their new owners from June onwards. Bikes can be applied for at municipal social services.

100 have so far benefited

Volunteers will be fixing up the bikes received under the keen guidance of bicycle-repair experts provided by the Icelandic Mountain Bike Club and Youth. You can follow the collection or sign up as a repair volunteer on the campaign Facebook page (here).

Since the first campaign in 2012, some 100 children have received a second-hand bike from the collection.
