"I wish you and your family a very happy birthday," read a telegram from President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson to Georg Breiðfjörð Ólafsson who became 106 years old last Thursday. He is the first Icelandic man to attain this age.

"You have lived through the most eventful and changing times in Icelandic history, " continued the telegram which was sent to Ólafssons home  in Stykkishólmur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Ólafsson's son, Ágúst Ólafur, says that he's a really healthy and happy person. "He has an incredible memory and really notices what's going on around him." He adds that his father's longevity can't be due to a healthy diet. "He's just always eaten really traditional Icelandic food with hardly any fruit or vegetables. But he's always taken care of his health overwise."

Ólafsson lives at the Stykkishólmur home for the elderly with his brother who is 100 years old.
