A motion has been passed at the general meeting of the Icelandic Association of Sheep Farmers to look into getting lamb officially recognised as the national dish of Iceland.

Getting the ball rolling

According to Þórarinn Ingi Pétursson, Director of the Association, the next step is to look into how this resolution can be implemented. The process may begin by contacting a ministry or ministries to find out whether such certification is possible.

Other contenders?

Competition may be stiff, however, with several other dishes based on meat, fish or milk being possible candidates for this culinary distinction.

Jóhannes Þór Hauksson, political advisor to the Icelandic Prime Minister, has indicated that it might be an idea to hold a public vote on the matter, possibly using the new e-voting system developed by Registers Iceland.
