The two boys who were in the river accident in Hafnarfjörður yesterday afternoon are both in hospital in grave condition. One of them regained consciousness after CPR but the other is on a respirator and has not gained consciousness. The two boys, brothers, are aged 10 and 11 and got stuck in the waterfall that comes of the Reykdalsstífla dam.

A man in his twenties tried to rescue them but fell into the current by the waterfall. When police, ambulances and the fire brigade arrived the boys were still stuck in the waterfall and the man was in the water nearby. Rescue operations were difficult due to the heavy current. As soon as the boys were brought back to shore, CPR was started.

Yesterday. mbl.is received the information from the fire brigade that a third child had tried to rescue the two brothers but a police statement later clarified that there was no third child involved, but a man in his twenties.

According to Steinunn Þorsteinsdóttir, press representative for the town of Hafnarfjörður, the boys who had the accident do not go to school in Hafnarfjörður. "Our thoughts are with their families," she said. All schools near the area of the accident were notified and psychologists will be speaking to the schoolchildren today.
