An Iranian asylum seeker being escorted from the Red Cross headquarters at noon after pouring flammable liquid over himself with the intention of self-harm. mbl.is/Júlíus

A man who had poured petrol over himself in front of the Red Cross headquarters in Reykjavik this morning was overpowered by police at noon. An extensive police squad and ambulances were called to the site. 

The man, an Iranian asylum seeker in Iceland poured petrol over himself at the headquarters office building in Efstaleiti just before noon. According to mbl.is sources the man has lived in Iceland for six months. He was overpowered as soon as he tried to harm himself. 

According to Red Cross press relation officer Björn Teitsson, the man is under the protection of the Red Cross in Iceland. 

The man was transported by police to a local hospital where he is being tended to.
