With news of colder weather on the way, Icelanders can look back warmly to September, which in many places was hotter and drier than average.

In a few places, September was actually the warmest month of 2015 so far. In others, it was among the warmest Septembers on record.

The Article-circle island of Grímsey, for instance, saw an average September temperature of 8.4°C – this 3.1°C above average, making September 2015 the eighth warmest September since records began 142 years ago.

Rainfall was slightly above average in southern Iceland, but below average in northern parts.

The average temparture in the capital Reykjavik was 9.1°C (0.6°C above the latest ten-year average) and in Akureyri it was 9.6°C (1.7°C above the latest ten-year average).

The forecast for the next 24 hours, however, is for falling temperatures, night frosts and the possibility of sleet and snow.
