Less than two weeks after it made its appearance outside the Iceland branch of the Swedish furniture giant IKEA, Iceland’s famous Christmas goat has burned to a crisp.

Covered in thousands of lights, the six-metre-tall goat towers overs the surrounding landscape, bringing light and Christmas cheer as the winter nights draw in.

At least, it did until today, when one the Christmas lights on the goat ignited, burning the entire structure down to the frame in just three minutes.

The goat is protected by security guards 24/7 and is also surrounded by an electric fence and monitored by a surveillance camera. The images from the camera suggest that this was no act of vandalism, as has occurred in the past.

A new Christmas goat is currently being put together and IKEA hopes it will be ready and installed by the weekend.
