A 31-year-old Icelandic man with possible links to South American drug barons has been reported missing in Paraguay, according to ABC Color (link in Spanish).

There has reportedly been no trace of Guðmundur Spartakusar Ómarsson since he was stopped by Paraguayan police in November 2013.

ABC Color quotes Icelandic police as fearing for Ómarsson’s life, given the length of time since his last sighting. Icelandic news outlet DV, however, quotes Ómarsson’s father as saying that he spoke to his son on Skype just before the New Year.

Neither are Icelandic police ruling out Ómarsson’s possible involvement with drug barons in Brazil and Paraguay, says ABC Color.

Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV reports that Ómarsson has been in the company of Friðrik Kristjánsson, a second Icelander missing in Paraguay since the spring of 2013, and that there are suspicions that Ómarsson may have somehow harmed Kristjánsson.

Ómarsson’s case is not officially on the files of the Icelandic Foreign Ministry.

He was stopped by police in the Paraguayan city of Concepción on 1 November 2013 and was reportedly travelling in a vehicle with two Paraguayan nationals. He has not been seen since.
