Storm hits Reykjavik between 6 and 8 pm - weather in West Fjords will be atrocious
Today is definately not a day for travelling - main mountain roads will probably close by the afternoon.
A storm warning was issued yesterday by the Iceland Met Office for today. Snow is already falling in many parts of Iceland and winds will start to pick up from around noon in South and West Iceland with rain and sleet.
The storm will hit Reykjavik between 6 and 8 pm tonight but should calm down at around 9 pm. The forecast is particularly bad for West Iceland and the West Fjords with a raised danger of avalanches in the north-east part of the West Fjords.
Due to the snowstorm, mountain roads will likely close in South West Iceland, in roads such as Hellisheiði, Mosfellsheiði and Þrengsli.
Today's storm is the lowest area of depression to hit Iceland in the New Year.
People are dissuaded from travel today. Visit the Iceland Road Administration for further information.
