Picking up a phrase book and showing off with lines in Icelandic while visiting Iceland probably won’t get you all that far, as the pronunciation is a handful. An online class however will to get you a lot further.
Icelandic Online is a project of the University of Iceland. It offers different levels of courses in Icelandic through the internet, free of charge.
The basic courses teach common and useful phrases. The most advanced focuses on Icelandic literary texts. Finish all the lessons and you might just be able to read centuries old Icelandic sagas for yourself in Icelandic.
