More Icelanders want Iceland to stay out of Eurovision this year than those who want the nation to participate.

This is stated in a new poll conducted by Maskína. According to the results, 32.3% of respondents were in favour of Iceland’s participation in the competition, while 42.2% were against it. Furthermore, 25.5% of respondents did not take a stand and didn’t mind either way.

The Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV announced earlier this week that Hera Björk would be going out to Malmö in Sweden and competing in Eurovision on Iceland’s behalf with the song Scared of Heights.

Until then, it was not clear whether Iceland would participate this year. On one hand, there was a loud demand that Iceland avoid the competition because of Israel’s participation, and on the other hand, there was a problem with the vote in the final song contest here, which put a strain on the count.

Almost 40% unhappy

According to Maskína, 39.5% of respondents are dissatisfied with Iceland’s contribution to the competition this year. 33.4% were satisfied and 27.1% were moderately satisfied.

It should be noted that more Icelanders wanted Hera’s song to be chosen as Iceland’s contribution over the Palestinian Bashar Murad’s Wild West. Thus, 42% of respondents were more inclined to think Hera Björk’s song would win as Iceland’s contribution to the contest compared to 37.9% who were more inclined to think Bashar Murad’s song would win. 20% of respondents did not care.
