Iceland is one of only seven countries in the world that meet the World Health Organization’s criteria for air quality. The other countries are Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Mauritius and New Zealand. Iceland is the country in Europe with the highest air quality.

This is the stated in a new report from the Swiss-based IQAir Institute, which draws on data from weather stations in 134 countries in the last year. The measured particles are called PM2.5, which are smaller than 2.5 micrometers in size and small enough to enter the bloodstream. PM2.5 is the most lethal form of air pollution, which causes millions of deaths every year.

WHO sets a limit of 5 micrograms of these particles per cubic meter of air every year.

Most pollution in Central and South Asia

The highest levels of air pollution were in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Tajikistan, and Burkina Faso.

The ten cities with the highest air pollution are in central and southern Asia. The four cities with the highest air pollution were in India.

The report also states that for the first time, Canada is the most polluted country in North America. The 13 cities on the continent with the highest levels of air pollution are all in Canada.
