Hiker found deceased on Fimmvörðuháls

The hiker who was searched at Fimmvörðuháls yesterday has been found dead.

This is what the South Iceland police report on Facebook, but the South Iceland rescue teams were called out to search for the man yesterday. A helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard was brought in to fly over the area. The man was found at about 4 o’clock pm.

Shortly before noon today, the police received a notice that a person had not returned to work after Easter, the police report said.

No suspicion of foul play

The last time the man was heard from was on Easter Sunday, and he had planned to walk to Baldvinsskáli on Fimmvörðuháls. The police immediately began the investigation and found his vehicle in a parking lot near Skógar.

“As a result, it was decided to launch a rescue team in the area to search, as well as to get a helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard to help with the search. It was then around 4 in the afternoon when the crew of the helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard found the man close to Baldvinsskáli. The man was dead when he was found.”

The man, who was in his sixties, was a foreign born citizen but resided in Iceland. The police in South Iceland are investigating the case but do not believe that there was foul play.
