Unhealthy air quality was measured at the Blue Lagoon yesterday, which is closed as a result and does not reopen until 14 today. The pollution comes from the eruption in the Sundhnúkagígar crater row.

“There is a lot of gas pollution coming from this eruption. The weather, the wind direction, and the wind are what is causing this pollution,” Bryndís Ýr Gísladóttir, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, told mbl.is yesterday.

The measurements of the Environment Agency of Iceland show sulfur pollution near the lagoon. To be considered good air quality, the pollution would have to measure less than 350 micrograms per cubic meter, preferably none of it.

“As weather conditions are unfavorable today, Sunday, April 14, and may air quality, all our operations will be closed until 2 pm today,” the Blue Lagoon website announced.

The lagoon also had to close temporarily due to pollution earlier this week.
