A cry for help from Iceland

An angry Reddit user has posted up a long comment about the political situation in Iceland over the past weeks. User "askur" criticizes the debt relief plan, the case of the leak from the Ministry of the Interior, the healthcare situation and mentions the doctors' strike and the music teachers' strike in a bid to make people aware of the fact that "something very bad is happening in Oz."

The post by askur has received hundreds of comments from the world over from readers who seem very surprised at the situation he portrays and the lack of international publicity thereof.

askur states, " I am angry and my opinions are coloured by that. However, I'm one of the people who benefit the most from this all without being a part of the elite. I'm well above the average pay-grade here and as I get paid in euroes I'm almost completely shielded from the nonsense that is the Icelandic Krona and the implicit inflation that follows it every month. I'm also educated in a sector that highly sought after internationally so I could leave this place any time I wanted to. But I also have friends, family and loved ones here who I have to look at breaking their head over decisions that nobody should ever have to think about. I also have friends who are vehemently opposed to my opposition of the government because I'm a freeloading hippie that just wants free money."

User sebastiankirk posts a comment saying that he works for a large Danish newspaper and had no idea of any of those things Askur points out. Many commentators add that international media coverage tends to focus on the fact that Iceland fared better in the economic crash than most other countries.
