On Friday, the Icelandic division of Amnesty International presented Ólöf Nordal, Icelandic Minister for Home Affairs, with a petition containing 3,557 signatures urging the government to ratify the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

Amnesty International Iceland has in recent days given the public the opportunity to sign the petition.

Nordal was presented with the petition on Friday. The document calls upon the Minister and the government to ratify the Optional Protocol without delay.

The Icelandic authorities are urged not to “confine themselves to promises that citizens will not be subjected to torture or other degrading treatment, but to entrust an independent supervisory authority with the task of ensuring such promises are kept”.
