Árni Páll Árnason, leader of the centre-left Social Democratic Alliance (‘Samfylkingin’), has reacted strongly to a news item posted yesterday evening on the website of new Icelandic television channel Hringbraut. He dismisses reports of his doubts on the European Union (EU) and the euro as “a completely absurd interpretation of what I said”.

Constant reappraisal

“I have for years made a habit of calling the EU into question and wondering whether joining would be the right thing for Iceland. I have regularly reassessed my stance but always come to the conclusion that EU membership is Iceland’s best option and I stand by that. Support for or opposition to EU membership should not be an article of faith, but should be based on an assessment of Icelandic interests in the context of foreign developments. Since both Icelandic interests and circumstances abroad can change, the matter requires constant reappraisal,” Árnason clarifies.
