A new Gallup opinion poll shows that almost 92% of Icelanders agree that the minimum monthly wage for full-time employment should be raised to ISK 300,000 (approx. €2,000) within the next three years.
This is one of the demands made by the Icelandic Professional Trade Association (SGS), whose members are set to undertake wide-ranging industrial action starting tomorrow. Just 4.2% of respondents to the survey were against the ISK 300,000 minimum-wage idea.
Respondents were also asked for their figures on what the minimum monthly wage for full-time employment should be. The average result was ISK 329,000 (approx. €2,230).
Managing Director of SGS, Drífa Snædal, is happy with the results of the Gallup poll. “It is high time for the minimum wage in Iceland to be good enough to live on and the public clearly supports us on this,” she says. “The demands of SGS and society as a whole must be heeded.”
