Foreign Minister on Middle East visit

Icelandic Foreign Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson is currently on an official visit to the Middle East. The visit will take in Israel, Palestine and Jordan.

Sveinsson met yesterday with Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu, who also serves as the country’s foreign minsiter.

The pair discussed Iceland’s position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Sveinsson insisted on the importance of new talks based on a two-state solution and condemned violence against civilians on both sides.

According to a press release from the Iceland Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministers also discussed bolstering bilateral relations between Iceland and Israel in areas such as aviation, investment and innovation.

Other topics of discussion included the situation in Syria, the Icelandic economy, and security in Europe. Sveinsson also visited a memorial monument to the victims of the Holocaust.

The Minister’s visit takes him today to Ramallah Palestine, where he will meet with Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah.
