Seismicity has been intensive in northern Vatnajökull from midnight GMT. At around 03:00 (3am) a magnitude 5,5 earthquake struck at the northern edge of Bárðarbunga. In the days since August 16th, 13 earthquakes magnitude 5 or more have happened in that area. Seismicity intensified after the earthquake.
A Met Office geographer reports that around 190 earthquakes have taken place since midnight, most of them in the dyke leading from Bárðarbunga and Heirðubreiðartögl, where seismicity has been increasing since the end of last week.
Volcanic activity in the Holuhraun fissure is similar to what it was yesterday.
