Guðmundur K. Sigurdórsson, editor of local news-web Sunnlenska, flew over the new rifts south of the first rift that formed in Holuhraun. The rifts are closer to Dyngjujökull Glacier.

"It's scary to see the new rifts so much closer to the glacier than the previous rift," Guðmundur said to an mbl.is journalist. Fresh rifts opened up during the night in Holuhraun, 2 kilometers north of Dyngjujökull. Currently, there are no indications of the eruption slowing down.

According to Guðmundur, the new rifts are very long, but not as powerful as the previous one. "It looked more like the new rifts were sizzling and boiling," whereas the original rift looks more like lava explosions.

"It's hard to describe this. It's all very majestic and obviously a lot of power underground. The colors are amazing and the lava is flowing in all directions." Guðmundur flew over the Fimmvörðuháls eruption in 2010, and says that this eruption looks completely different.
