China has appointed new ambassador to Iceland. The new Chinese envoy, Zhang Weidong, is former ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia. He took over that post in 2009.
Zhang replaces China's former ambassador to Reykjavík Ma Jisheng who left Iceland earlier this year months before his appointment would come to an end.
The Chinese government told Icelandic authorities that the former ambassador could not return to Iceland due to personal issues but the international media has claimed that he was arrested along with his wife for alleged spying for Japan. Beijing has refused to comment on that. Ma was a senior Chinese diplomat in Japan from 2004-2008.
