The Icelandic Meteorological Office has released a statement regarding today's activities surrounding Bárðarbunga and Dyngjujökull. After having observed the area from air, they now state that there are no obvious signs of volcanic activity.

At 11:20 today, seismic tremor measurements gave a strong indication that an eruption beneath Dungjujökull was occurring. Tremor levels decreased during the afternoon, although intense earthquake activity continues.

At 14:00 an over-flight was made to Bárðarbunga by TF-SIF, the aircraft of the Icelandic coastguard. The aircraft carried scientists from the Icelandic Met-office, The University of Iceland and representatives from the National Commissioner of the Icelandi Police.

During the overflight, which was made in good, clear conditions, no significant changes on the surface of Vatnajökull were observed with the radar measurements the aircraft contained.

Likewise, there were no signs of floodwater draining from the ice margin.

In light of the intense, ongoing earthqquake activity and crustal deformation at Bárðarbunga, the Icelandic Met-office has decided that the aviation coulor-code should remain red, signifying that an eruption is either imminent, or in progress. The situation will be reassessed tomorrow morning.
