The IMO estimates that around 8.000 earthquakes have occurred since seismic activity picked up on August 16th. Seismic activity appears to be intensifying. Over the past 48 hours before this is written, 2.173 quakes have been registered.

New to Icelandic? Here is how to pronounce Dyngjujökull and Bárðarbunga.

The earthquakes also appear to be growing in magnitude, with a magnitude 4,9 earthquake happening near Bárðarbunga at 20:39 GMT tonight. So far, there still is no sign of an eruption but the earthquakes are getting stronger. The IMO believes this is because of more volitility inside the dyke, or that the rock that the magma is crushing through is more resistant.

The dyke that started around Bárðarbunga now stretches some 4 kilometers north of Dyngjujökull.

On the IMO website you can clearly see how the dyke has been moving over the past few days.
