For some reason, a few people seem to think that the closings around Holuhraun don't apply to them. People without proper authorization, which are issued to e.g. scientists and sometimes journalist, have been arrested around the Holuhraun eruption.

Víðir Reynisson, Department Manager at the Department of Civil Protection stresses the importance of respecting the closings. They are for your own good.

"People in the town of Reyðarfjörður experienced a great deal of discomfort yesterday because of gases from the eruption. The distance from the site of the eruption to the town are some 80 kilometers," Víðir said in an interview with mbl.is

"The gases are much more concentrated around the eruption. The gases cover the area and are probably lethal." Víðir said, adding that scientists working around the rift have advanced equipment to detect and protect them from gases. Despite this, they regularly have to evacuate the area to avoid the highest concentrations of gases.

"The ground is constantly changing, with new rifts opening up. We know examples of eruptions starting without any notice; sometimes we don't know of them until we see them with."
