Hlemmur, the former bus central of Reykjavik and surrounding areas have become a hub for great Asian food in the city. Here's a look at our favourite places in the area in no particular order.

1. Thai Kitchen

A  cheerful eat-in or take-out little restaurant tucked away in Borgartún near Hlemmur. Offers wonderful really authentic curries, pad thai, tom yum, laab (minced chicken or pork with fresh aromatic herbs and lots of chili)  and satay chicken to name a few of the dishes. Best of all, the atmosphere is actually very cosy if you choose to eat there, with smooth jazz playing and always bustling with clientele. Wine and beer available.

2. Mai Thai Bistro and Supermarket

A tiny bistro located within the Mai Thai shop at Hlemmur where you can purchase all kinds of Thai products. The shop offers everything from shampoo to fabrics and incense to herbs and condiments, and you can choose to eat in or take out from the bistro which offers noodles, rice dishes and curry staples. Has no alcohol licence.

3. Fine

Finally a great Chinese restaurant in the city centre. Fine is located on Rauðarárstígur, a stonethrow away from the Klambratún park and Hlemmur in a nondescript modern building but if lacking in charm, it makes up for it with its fantastic szechuan food. The clientele is predominantly Chinese families and the duck, the dumplings and the cumin lamb are absolutely fantastic, to only name a few of the delicious dishes on offer. Has wine and beer on the menu.

4.Ban Thai

This legendary Thai restaurant has been around for almost two decades and it's still hands down the best thai in Iceland. Offering a cosy atmosphere and excellent authentic Thai food, including a tear-inducing mouth wateringly good laab and jungle curry. This is a wonderful place for a romantic date or a fun evening out with friends, and hey, rumour has it that both Emma Watson and Russell Crowe ate here. Thai Singha beer and a wine selection available.

5. Báhn Mí

If you're looking for a quick bite, head to Báhn Mí, located inside the Hlemmur Mathöll food hall. The stand offers Vietnamese street food: bánh mí sandwiches, Vietnamese coffee, phó and summer rolls. All accompanied by a healthy dose of herbs, sriracha and pickles.
